Do you want to build a snowman?

Happy Monday to everyone!!! I’ve got a new therapeutic activity for you all to brighten the start of your week. Now, I know we’re already half way through the month of March, but I’ve decided to share one more snowy-themed activity before we jump into spring.

As you probably have noticed, it seems like all the kids are still talking about Disney’s Frozen. So last week I decided to throw a “Frozen” party in the playroom for all the kids (plus to help use up the last of our winter crafts). After doing much research, I found a couple of activities that could go with the Frozen theme and one of them turned out to be so simple and such fun that I wanted to share it with you. Sadly, I didn’t take pictures though, so you’ll have to do with a text post this time.

I decided to call the activity “Do you want to build a snowman?” since that’s one of the popular lines in the movie and I figured it would be a great attention grabber. And to a certain extent, that’s exactly what the activity is. We created our own snow from 2 household products and then made snowmen. What you’ll need is shaving cream (gotta love that stuff!), baking soda, and a large container to help keep the mess contained (for my child life friends, if you’re doing this in the hospital, the large pink basins work great!). Squirt a large amount of shaving cream (you can use the whole can if you want) into your container. Then pour baking soda on top and start mixing! Continue to add baking soda until you get the consistency you want. You can add drops of food coloring to change the color of your “snow”. Then build up your snowman, or whatever creation you want to make!

One thing to keep in mind is the snow won’t last forever. As the bubbles in the shaving cream pop you’ll slowly loose the snow’s mass, so if you want to keep playing, add more shaving cream! This is an awesome tactile activity as well as a great one for kids who like to get “messy” because cleanup isn’t too hard. An added bonus? Pour vinegar on the snow when you’re done playing and watch the snow fizz and explode (volcano style)!
